How do implant-supported dentures work?
During your initial exam, our dentist will review your medical and dental histories, take X-rays and create impressions of your teeth and gums so that models can be created. These steps will help him determine whether dental implants are suitable for you. In rare cases, a CT scan also may be performed to see how much bone is left and to determine the best locations for the implants in your mouth.
Unlike regular dentures, implant-supported dentures cannot slip off your gums and do not require special adhesive to stay in place. Instead, they are firmly secured in your mouth with dental implants. Most often this form of dentures is placed in the lower jaw, where they tend to be more stable.
The procedure is very simple. Our dentist will surgically fix up to six implants in your jawbone, which will then be left to fuse with the bone for a few weeks. Once the implants are firmly integrated into your jaw, the dentures will be fixed on top of them through a range of different mechanisms.
With bar-retained dentures, a thin metal bar is attached to the implants that have been placed in your jawbone. The bar is fitted with clips for secure wear. Alternatively, ball-retained dentures use metal balls attached to the tops of three or more dental implants.
