Making dental implants work

From the very founding of our clinic, it’s been our goal to provide the best quality care at reasonable and accessible prices. Dental implants Richmond have become very important to what we do, giving patients back the full utility and aesthetics of their teeth, without the need for dental adhesives or glues. Let’s look under the hood of how implants work and what we do to make them available to as many of our patients as possible.

Implant success rate

Implant technology has made a big impact in dentistry on the whole, but it often finds itself being oversold. The truth is that as long as the most invasive procedures are carried out at local clinics, they must be done professionally and within strict guidelines. So, there are many factors that go into the success rate of dental implants Richmond.

Only some of the factors can be influenced by treatment in the clinic. During the osseointegration phase of care, where the titanium implant is slowly integrated into the jaw, genetic factors, general health and bone growth rate are all paramount, as is the hormonal balance and dietary health. If integration has not occurred within 12 months, the implantation process is considered unsuccessful and is removed.

So how do we maximise the chances of a successful treatment?

There are several preparation procedures that can significantly improve the chances of successful implantation. We also carry out an intensive exploration of your medical history; many medications have the side effect of reducing or inhibiting bone growth. This is often tolerated with prescriptions taken by adults as, in most situations, it is an acceptable limitation of the medication. Finding alternative prescriptions or pausing them if possible is a great way to improve the chances of osseointegration.

Bone grafts

The bone grafts carried out in our clinic involve removing a fragment of bone from a different location in the jaw to another for supporting an oral implant. The changes in the bone are monitored with a set of X-rays in the following weeks after a graft. When the new bone has fused, implantation can proceed.

Sinus lifting

Sinus lifting is a form of specialised bone graft that is applied to the upper jaw and involves making an incision in the roof of the mouth, giving access to the front of the sinuses and placing a bone graft, increasing the quantity of mass in that area.

Sinus lifting is giving the option to use standard oral implants, without having to resort to the long and often more complicated zygomatic implants, where the titanium component extends into the cheekbone.

Carrying out sinus lifting can be complicated, and we mitigate many of the risks and minimise the invasiveness of the treatment with extensive planning, facilitated by our in-house CT scanning, allowing us to create 3D models of the sinuses and operative space.
