Sheen Dental Implants; what’s on offer at our clinic

Oral implants have become available in many high street dentists, and we were one of the earlier adopters, achieving a very high success rate with Sheen dental implants Richmond. Let’s peek behind the curtains to see how we’ve done it and what to expect as a patient.

Titanium endosteal implants

Our Sheen dental implants Richmond, are at the epicentre of our clinic and have a long development history. Tooth extractions are one of the oldest dental procedures. What to do with the remaining gap, however? This is an open-ended question. Dental prosthetics like partial dentures or bridges have always been limited in their structural stability and never held as firmly in place as a natural tooth.

It was during the first studies in the 1950s on the use of titanium in surgery and the association that titanium makes with living bone that the groundwork was laid for a practical artificial root. When titanium was placed in or next to living bone, a very strong bond was formed between the interfacing surfaces, provided it contained no connective tissue and only resulted in soft scar tissue. This is very different to other metals which have a poorer association being surrounded by fibrous tissue.

With primary metal in all bone-related surgery and surgical pins becoming more widespread, in many ways, the artificial root of an implant is an unconventional surgical pin.

This takes oral implants outside of the normal skill set and consideration of a dentist, who rarely has to concern themselves with bone growth or interfaces between prosthetics and living bone. Additional training is required to do this well, picking up some of the skills of an orthopaedic surgeon.

Preparation treatment

Many clinics to improve their success rates have been highly selective with the patients they treat. This results in the clinic appearing to have excellent outcomes without having to dedicate the time and resources required for more complex cases. This is at the expense of the many patients who want and could get treatment access, but are denied.

We offer several treatment pathways that allow for edge cases (treatment profiles which are less likely to be successful)  to gain access to implantation with significantly improved chances of success.  This may involve as little as assessing your medication and finding alternatives, all the way to implantation surgeries like bone grafting or sinus lifts. We also consider non-standard implants like subperiosteal and zygomatic implants.

Our CT scan

Our in-house CT scanner might sound a little out of place, but it has been instrumental in all forms of treatment planning, it has had a particular impact on Sheen dental implants Richmond. CT scans produce a 3D model of different densities of tissue. So, what a 3D scanner is to a camera, a CT scanner is to an X-ray.

By using the 3D maps of density with surgical planning software, we can see the patient’s jaw from a lot of angles and look at the higher-density areas of bone and plan implants accordingly.
